Day 5 of 30
Everybody says you need an online presence for your bead jewelry business. But what are your options?
Well here are some ways to sell online that may suit you. I’ve included the pros and cons of each
eBay: eBay is a great way to get started selling online. It is easy to set up a profile and start selling – you can do it in less than 30 minutes. The problem I have is that people on eBay are searching for a bargain. So it is hard to make a decent living from eBay, especially as there is a lot of competition from lower priced, mass produced jewelry.
The overall effect is that prices (and your profits!) are driven down and believe me, you don’t ever want to set up a business based on offering the lowest prices. You’ll be undercut and out of business before you can say “eBay”.
To be fair, some people do make a living selling their handcrafted items there – although it seems to be the exception rather than the rule.
Online craft malls. like Etsy.com, Artfire.com, 1000markets.com etc, seem to be the middle ground between eBay and having your own website.
The advantage is that everybody that buys from online craft malls like Etsy know that they are getting quality handmade jewelry, which tends to be more expensive than mass produced items.
That said, if you are going to sell through this medium you really have to focus on what makes your jewelry unique and makes you stand out from the crowd. All too often, new bead jewelry artists will put up their site and think that hordes of customers will come their way.
But when you think about it, there are thousands of jewelry makers selling their wares at these online craft malls, all selling quality jewelry. If you aren’t offering something different, why would a casual shopper buy from you?
In my opinion these malls are a great way to get started online, you can have a shop up in a small amount of time and it is a great way to dip your toes in the water.
But personally I recommend that you consider getting your own website so that you aren’t being compared to other bead jewelry artists and putting yourself in such a competitive space.
If you do decide to start with an online craft malls be prepared to do your own marketing as you would have to with your own website. The risk here is that you can direct people to your online craft mall store and they get distracted and start looking at another store.
So essentially you are paying for marketing for them to go off and visit someone else site and buy from them. Not Cool
Your own website
The technical aspects of a website often put people off, but you don’t need to know everything about websites to get an online presence. You can start your own website by using a template website or by getting someone to build it for you.
Outsourcing your website construction need not be expensive either if you know where to look and what to ask for.
The benefits of having your own website is that you know that your marketing efforts are all going to promote your site, it’s easy to test and fine tune your website too help you maximise your sales, and you have a lot more control over the layout and design of your site.
