Day 2 of 30

So you want to start a bead jewelry business, but you’re not sure where to start.

The easiest place to begin is determining WHY you want to start your own business.

Do you want to start a business so you can work from home and be there for your family? Perhaps you are sick of the 9-5 grind and are just itching to leave your current job? Or maybe you’ve been making bead jewelry for a while and you think now is the time to take the leap and start selling it.

Each of these reasons are valid but you need to know what your reason is.

Starting any business is hard and when times get tough, as they will, will you have a reason big enough to continue.

Next, you need the determination and self-belief that you CAN start your own business!

Building a successful business can be tricky if you’ve never done it before. You might face technical, financial and social challenges. But if you believe that you can do it then that is part of the battle won. In a later post I’ll talk about how you can improve your chances of success by surrounding yourself with successful people.

Next, you need to determine where your STRENGTHS lie.

If you want to start an online bead jewelry business and you don’t know your html from your shopping cart then you have a big learning curve ahead of you.

What will you outsource and what can you do yourself? How much time do you want to devote to learning the ropes? How much capital do you have to invest?

What tasks do you like doing? I’m guessing that you like creating bead jewelry (why else would you be here :-) ) and want to spend most of your time doing that but running a business involves marketing, doing the books, talking to your customers etc. Creating is not enough – do you have it in you to RUN a business?

I remember hearing about a concept called “finding your hidden gold”. The things that you like doing you will get done faster whereas the things you don’t like doing will take ages and may not get done at all. If you bog yourself down with too many tasks that you don’t enjoy you will get discouraged easily. So being able to outsource some tasks is important.

If cash is tight, can you partner with someone who has the skills you need in return for doing something for them in which you have the talent and they don’t?

At the end of the day, what you most need in your bead jewelry business is momentum. So make sure you don’t get bogged down and find that you are not making progress. Tomorrow we’ll look at how you can find the help you need.

Finally, now you have decided to take the plunge, tell everybody about what you do.

Tell your friends, family and colleagues that you are a bead jewelry artist and be proud of your new profession!

Go for it – you can do it!
